Feel The Javanese Tradition Inside Every Malioboro Hotel

Malioboro Street is well known as souvenirs and crafts shopping area. But Malioboro is not just about shopping, it also has dozens of hotels with traditional touch. And the most exciting thing is; the Malioboro hotel you are staying in might be one of them!

There are many Malioboro hotel that was the residence of someone important or rich once upon a time. These residences might have Javanese or Dutch architecture, according to which it belongs to. Like Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta, for instance, this dates back to 1918. It was the home of a Chinese merchant and the architecture is influenced by colonial Dutch design.

Inna Garuda is another classic Malioboro hotel. It was built in 1908 with classical Indonesia style. The Dutch colonial government first built this cottage hotel to accommodate the Dutch military guests. It was named Grand Hotel de Djokdja and it was the biggest and most luxurious hotel at that time. Now the hotel management is transferred to private company, and changed into Inna Garuda.

Ambarrukmo hotel is part of the Ambarrukmo Royal Palace Residence which was built between 1857 and 1859 by King Hamengkubuwono VI. It was then named Pesanggrahan Arjapurna, and serve as a meeting place with the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, and the royal family’s resort. The hotel itself was constructed in the 1960s, under the initiative of King Hamengkubuwono IX and Indonesian first president, Mr. Soekarno. In fact, we all know that this is the first ever luxury hotel located in the city of Yogyakarta.

Indonesia’s batik has a long history, and behind Yogyakarta batik there was deep Javanese concept of life.  You will find a lot of Malioboro hotel, such as Istana Batik Ratna Hotel, use batik extensively as their decoration item, and by doing so create a traditional atmosphere for their guest while at the same time preserve ancient Javanese heritage.
